Promoting Healthy Eating and Physical Activity

At Summerfields Nursery we believe that healthy eating and physical activity are an important part of a child’s learning and development.

Nursery HEPA Grant
We applied for and have been awarded a grant from East Sussex County Council. We had to be audited and produce an action plan detailing how we will use the grant to increase physical activity and promote healthy eating in the setting.

Healthy Eating

To further promote healthy eating and oral hygiene within the nursery, Sarah (our EYFS Lead) has been trained in ways to make learning about healthy eating fun. This is done through games, songs and activities. We will be introducing a set of lunchbox guidelines and are also introducing a hydration station where we will encourage every child to drink more water. We are going to be creating an edible garden where the children can grow their own herbs, fruit and vegetables. We will be holding a healthy eating garden party towards the end of the summer term where parents will be able to come and taste all the lovely food the children have grown.

Physical Activity

We will be purchasing a large amount of new equipment to increase physical activity in the setting including new ride-on cars, trikes, pushchairs, den-building materials and a mud kitchen. We are also purchasing construction toys, sand and water trays for transporting, new world music CD’s and a CD player. These will be used regularly to provide increased opportunity for the children to engage in physical activity.

Parental Involvement

To make this work, we need your help. If any parents would like to help with planting our edible garden, please see Val or Sarah. Towards the end of the summer term we will be holding a garden party where you will be able to try some of the food that the children have grown and share a picnic lunch with your child. We will let you know the date nearer the time.

As part of our programme, we need to establish a baseline for dietary habits and physical activity for children within the setting so we would be grateful if you could complete a survey for us. It will only take a few minutes of your time and is anonymous and confidential.
